How to talk to a painter in Sweden
The trade is målare. Interior painting and wallpaper are everyday jobs. The outside of a building, fasad, is often a shared decision. Ask for an offert that separates labour, paint and prep such as filling (spackling).
Words
- måla om — repaint
- spackla — fill holes and cracks
- tapet — wallpaper
- tak — ceiling, when a painter says it
- fasad — facade
- kulör — colour
Message you can send
Hej, jag vill måla om [vardagsrum / sovrum] på [adress] i [ort]. Ytan är ungefär [m²]. Behöver ni spackla först? Skicka gärna en offert med arbete och färg var för sig. Mvh [namn] [telefon]
For the outside, write fasaden instead of the room, and say whether it is wood (trä) or render (puts).
Permission before the outside is painted
A house you own: you choose the colour, and the municipality sometimes cares in a protected street. Ask the kommun if a neighbour says the colour is regulated. A bostadsrätt: the facade belongs to the association. Mail the board before a painter sets a scaffold against the wall. A rental: painting the inside when you move out is often about returning the flat to the agreed state. Painting it a new colour while you live there can be a breach of the lease. Ask the landlord first.
On the phone and on the invoice
Say the room and the square metres. Ask whether furniture has to be moved and whether that time is in the quote. For 2026, the Swedish pages on this site — checked against Skatteverket in September 2026 — state that ROT is 30% of the labour cost and RUT is 50% of the labour cost. The two share a cap of 75,000 kronor per person per year, and ROT can be at most 50,000 kronor of that cap. Materials and travel are not included. Confirm the current figures at Skatteverket before you rely on them.
